Amazon kicked off Black Friday days ago with some pre-holiday sales on laptops and smartphones for a penny, but the online retailer expanded its offering today, and here's a look at a few of the things you can pick up.

Amazon is selling its 9.7-inch Kindle DX for $259, down from $379. The e-reader is similar but much larger than its now-$79 counterpart and is intended for reading magazines and newspaper content. For more, see PCMag's full review of the Kindle DX.

Rival Barnes & Noble is also offering $20 off its Nook Simple Touch e-reader.

Amazon, however, also has more than $100 off several laptops, including the black, 15.6-inch Asus A53E-XA2 for $479.99, a $200 discount. The device runs a 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5 processor, includes 4GB of memory, and has a 640GB hard drive. It comes pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium and boasts a 1366-by-768 display.

A 15.6-inch HP Pavilion dv6-6110us, meanwhile, is on sale for $499.99, down from $649.99. The laptop runs an AMD quad-core processor, includes 4GB of memory, and a 640GB hard drive.

If you're shopping for a camera, a 12-megapixel Canon PowerShot SX230 HS digital camera is selling for $199.99, a $150 price drop. A 9-inch Sony digital photo frame with a remote is also $69.99, down from $139.99.

On the HDTV front, a 37-inch Samsung 1080p LCD HDTV is selling for $654.47, down from $799.99. A 55-inch LED version is $1,723.53, down from $3,299.

Amazon also has various deals on select DVDs and Blu-ray discs. There are also the "lightning deals," which offer steep discounts on items for certain period of time and in limited quantities. Click on the Black Friday deals link on Amazon's homepage for details.

Other companies offering Web-based Black Friday deals today include Apple, Microsoft, Sony, and Verizon, to name a few. For more, see PCMag's Ultimate Guide to Black Friday 2011 and the hottest tech gifts for the holidays slideshow below.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
