Most retailers are kicking off their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales early, and Amazon is no exception. Among the various deals offered by the company are some of the top smartphones for just a penny.

"For a limited time only, all phones from Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T with a new line of service are on sale for a penny and include standard free two-day shipping," Amazon said on its Web site.

The deal started at midnight Pacific time yesterday and runs through 11:50pm Pacific on Nov. 28, or Cyber Monday. Those who activate the hotspot feature on eligible phones will also get a $100 Amazon.com gift card.

Amazon has 97 phones up for grabs, including the newly released Motorola Droid RAZR 4G (above) for Verizon, the Samsung Galaxy S II for Sprint and AT&T, the Motorola Droid Bionic 4G for Verizon, and the HTC Rezound 4G for Verizon.

The Droid Razr and HTC Rezound normally retail for $299.99, while the Droid Bionic is $249.99 and the Samsung Galaxy S II is $199.99.

Other devices that landed in the 1-cent bin include: the Samsung Stratosphere, which is currently Verizon's only keyboarded 4G LTE smartphone; the BlackBerry Torch 4G 9810 for AT&T, which PCMag found to be "dramatically faster than previous BlackBerrys"; and the HTC Droid Incredible 2 for Verizon, which includes a slightly larger screen, global calling, and a smoother design than its predecessor.

Sprint options include: the HTC EVO 3D 4G; the Motorola Photon 4G; the Samsung Epic 4G; the Windows-based HTC Arrive; the LG Marquee; HTC EVO Shift 4G; BlackBerry Torch 9850; HTC Hero; and more.

For AT&T, there's also the: HTC Inspire 4G; Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G; Samsung Infuse 4G; the Windows-based Samsung Focus S 4G, Focus Flash 4G, and HTC HD7 S; the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G; and the Samsung Captivate, among others.

Earlier this month, Amazon kicked off its "Countdown to Black Friday" event with lightning deals and discounts on electronics, games, and more. Yesterday, Best Buy also published its Black Friday doorbuster deals and Thanksgiving Day online sales.

Some additional Best Buy Black Friday deals leaked last week. My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
