If you're in the market for a tablet, but the iPad is a bit too pricey for your budget, Verizon Wireless is offering discounts on the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab, as well as select smartphones, as part of its Black Friday promotion.

Buyers can nab a Motorola Xoom tablet for $199.99, a $300 price drop, with a two-year contract. The 10.1-inch tablet includes 32GB of internal storage, 2-megapixel front-facing and 5-megapixel rear-facing cameras, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and a dual-core 1-GHz processor.

The 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab, meanwhile, is available for $149.99, a $50 discount. The 7-inch tablet runs Android 2.2 Froyo.

Verizon also has some discounts on several of its smartphones, like the HTC Droid Incredible 2, which bested its predecessor with a slightly larger screen, global calling, and a smoother design. The device, in red, is available for free with a two-year contract.

Other devices being offered for free with contract include: the LG Enlighten, the Xperia Play "PlayStation phone," Samsung Intensity II, LG Cosmos Touch, and the Motorola Droid Pro.

The LG Revolution, meanwhile, is $49.99, though PCMag found that the smartphone is "held back by mediocre call quality and a couple of subpar features." Also available for $49.99 is the Pantech Breakout, a budget device intended to allow users to tap into Verizon's 4G speeds.

Shoppers can also get a MiFi 4510L 4G hotspot for $29.99 with a contract or a free Verizon 4G USB Modem 551L, also with a contract.

Other Black Friday deals running today include those from Apple and Microsoft. For more, see PCMag's Ultimate Guide to Black Friday 2011 and the hottest tech gifts for the holidays slideshow below.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
