The first of the month, as always, delivers a load of new content to Netflix, including the Riddick flicks, the Rocky movies, and more. There are also Netflix originals, including a disturbing drama about a real-world murder and an even more disturbing documentary about the trial of Michael Jackson. Here's everything you can watch this coming week.
This Week on Netflix: PCMag's Picks
The Theory of Everything (May 31)
One new-to-Netflix movie that you might have missed is The Theory of Everything, a 2014 biopic about legendary physicist Stephen Hawking. As an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, he meets literature student Jane Wilde and begins a relationship that will span decades as his body begins to feel the effects of the motor neuron disease that will eventually render him nearly paralyzed. It's not historically accurate, but it is effective.
- Director: James Marsh
- Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Tom Prior
- Genre: Docudrama
- Rating: PG-13
- IMDB Rating: 7.7/10
Michael Jackson: The Verdict (June 3)
Hot on the heels of the hit Michael Jackson biopic, the new Netflix docuseries Michael Jackson: The Verdict dives into the most controversial period of the King of Pop's life, as accusations of inappropriate behavior with young boys became too much to ignore, culminating in a 2005 trial. Featuring interviews with jurors, lawyers, and people in Jackson's inner circle, it promises to be the deepest dive into the backrooms of Neverland to date.
- Director: Nick Green
- Genre: Documentary
- Rating: TV-MA
The Witness (June 4)
Based on a true story, the new miniseries The Witness looks absolutely harrowing. Young mother Rachel Nickell is brutally murdered in her own home, stabbed with scissors so viciously that a blade gets lodged in her skull. There's only one witness: her two-year-old son, Alex. Now the boy and his father must discover the truth, no matter where it leads them. Don't spoil the real-world ending for yourself before you watch it, because it's a shocker.
- Director: Alex Winckler
- Cast: Jordan Bolger, Max Fincham, James Bradshaw
- Genre: Drama
- Rating: TV-MA
