If you share your Disney+ account password with someone outside your household, get ready to pay a little extra.
Starting this week, Disney+ will charge $6.99 and $9.99 per month for each extra member you add to your Basic and Premium plans, respectively. Disney defines an extra member as someone who doesn't live with you or doesn't use a device associated with your primary personal residence. You can also transfer an existing profile to a new account.
(Credit: Disney)Disney has been testing account-sharing limits for almost a year. Last month, CEO Bob Iger said the crackdown would begin "in earnest" in September.
Known as Paid Sharing, Disney's password crackdown program is quite similar to Netflix's, but you can add only one extra member to your existing plan (Netflix allows two). The option is also not available for Disney Bundle subscribers or subscribers billed through third parties.
If you're away from home and want to watch Disney+, the streaming service may display a "This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the Household for this account" message. Disney says you can select I'm Away From Home or Update Household if you've moved and need to reset your location. "These selections will require a one-time passcode that’s sent to the email address associated with the account," Disney says.
The Paid Sharing program is live in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. It comes ahead of a planned price hike on Oct. 17, which will increase the ad-supported Basic plan from $7.99 to $9.99 and the ad-free Premium plan from $13.99 to $15.99.
