Google’s unreleased Pixel Watch 5 has appeared in one of the strangest leaks we have seen in recent years.

Photos of the Pixel Watch 5’s sensor and strap were shared in an X post by the creator of Borderlands, Randy Pitchford. In the lengthy post, Pitchford writes that the watch was obtained by one of his friends while he was scuba diving near the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean.

The back sensor clearly says Google Pixel Watch 5 and also appears quite similar to the sensor on the Pixel Watch 4. “The face indicates an empty battery, but seems to have enough reserve power to display the correct time,” Pitchford adds in his post.

How the watch ended up at the bottom of the sea is a mystery. It’s also unclear if all of this is part of some planned promotion by Google.

The company usually announces its new Pixel phones and watches at the Made by Google event in August. However, the date for this year’s event has not been announced yet. The possibility of a Pixel Watch 5 is also unconfirmed, so the leak's timing raises even more questions.

This wouldn’t be the first time unreleased devices appeared in unusual locations, though. As The Verge notes, the Pixel Watch 2 ended up in the hands of a restaurant bartender in 2022, while a pre-release iPhone 4 was famously found at a bar in 2010.
