If you’re looking to modernize your home's entryway, installing a smart lock or a video doorbell is an excellent place to start. With the Lockin Veno Pro, you get the capabilities of both in a single device. This versatile smart lock supports palm and fingerprint scanning technology, voice and app control, keypad and traditional key access, and doubles as a 2K video doorbell that offers intelligent alerts and free onboard video storage. It also supports the Matter and Thread protocols and works with Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings. At $379.99, it doesn’t come cheap, but with its rich feature set and high-quality build, the Lockin Veno Pro readily earns our Editors’ Choice award.

Design: Bulky, But Packed With Features

The Veno Pro is a full lock assembly that uses a black zinc alloy enclosure with an IP65 weatherproof rating. It comes with interior and exterior escutcheons, a deadbolt assembly, a strike plate, two keys, a removable battery pack, assorted mounting hardware, and a quick-start guide. The lock is designed to fit doors that are 1-3/8 to 2-11/64 inches thickness with a 1-inch crossbore diameter. The lithium-ion battery pack will provide up to three months of power before requiring a charge, but if you want to extend your battery life, you can order a Veno Pro bundled with a solar panel for $448.99.

At 7.2 by 3.2 by 1.4 inches (HWD), the exterior escutcheon is one of the bulkiest locks we’ve come across, but it packs a lot into its oversized frame. The very top of the enclosure holds a palm vein scanner, a feature we have also seen in the Philips Series 5000 Smart Deadbolt ($359.99) and the TCL D1 Pro ($199.99) locks. Using Lockin’s Venokey technology, the palm vein scanner has an IR sensor that creates a map of the pattern of the veins in your palm. An image of the vein map is stored in the app and is used to identify you when you show the scanner your hand.

Below the vein scanner is a camera lens, a pair of ambient light sensors, IR LEDs for black-and-white night vision, and a camera status LED. Further down the lock face is a fingerprint scanner, a capacitive touch keypad, and a lock status LED that glows white when the door is unlocked, red when it is locked, and flashes red when a verification scan fails or when the battery is low.

At the bottom of the enclosure is a doorbell button that slides away to reveal a traditional keyway and a reboot button. Below that is a PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor. A small speaker is embedded on the left side, and there’s a microphone on the right. The bottom edge has an emergency USB-C charging port that can be used with a portable power supply to operate the lock if the battery runs out of power.

The lock has a built-in door-open sensor and offers auto-lock and anti-tamper features. You can assign single-use, temporary, and time-based passcodes, and the lock includes wrong-try protection (after a certain number of tries, it's disabled for a minute). A vacation mode requires an administrator password to unlock the door and sends an alert if the door is opened from the inside while you’re away.

The doorbell camera captures 2K video when the button is pressed or when motion is detected. It has a 180-degree field of view, which offers a head-to-toe view of your doorstep. It can capture color video in low-light conditions and uses AI to identify people, packages, and vehicles. It also offers 32GB of internal storage that will provide up to one year of free recorded event video.

At 7.2 by 3.2 by 1.2 inches, the interior escutcheon is just as bulky as its exterior counterpart. The battery pack compartment and a programming button are hidden behind a removable front panel, and there’s a thumbturn knob toward the bottom for manually locking and unlocking the door.

The Veno Pro has built-in Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and Bluetooth radios and supports Thread networking. It also supports Matter, which means it works with multiple smart home automation platforms, including Alexa, Google, HomeKit, and SmartThings, when connected using a hub that serves as a Matter controller. However, you get more granular controls when using the Lockin Smart mobile app (available for Android and iOS) than you do with third-party home automation apps. The lock does not work with IFTTT applets that provide interoperability with a wide range of third-party devices.

The Lockin Smart App: Plenty of Customization Options

The Veno Pro gets its own panel on the Devices screen of the Lockin Smart app. The panel displays the last captured image from the doorbell camera and tells you whether the door is locked or unlocked. Tapping the panel opens a screen with a live video stream that can be viewed in full-screen mode with another tap. Below the video panel are buttons for manual recording, taking a snapshot, muting the speaker, and changing video quality.

There are also buttons for locking and unlocking the door, generating a one-time passcode, and playing a quick reply. The app provides three standard replies, such as “Hello, we’re not here right now,” but you can record your own message if you prefer.

Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner of the app to access the doorbell and lock settings. Here, you can change power settings (optimal battery, balanced, or optimal surveillance); adjust motion sensitivity and create motion zones; add users with palm, fingerprint, and passcode access; and configure automatic doorbell replies. Lock settings let you enable or disable one-touch locking, palm unlocking, auto-wakeup with a palm scan, and vacation mode.

Other settings allow you to enable auto-lock, set a number for wrong-try attempts, and adjust audio settings such as alarm volume and duration. Use the Matter Integration setting to prepare the lock for binding with Alexa, Google, HomeKit, and SmartThings platforms and their corresponding apps.

To access device activity, tap the Events button at the bottom of the Devices screen. Here you can view a list of all doorbell and lock/unlock events, view doorbell video clips, download videos to your device, or delete them.

Installation and Performance: Simple and Reliable

Installing the Veno Pro is just as easy as installing any door lock. I started by removing my old lock assembly and installing the deadbolt assembly and strike plate. I fed the data cables on the back of the exterior escutcheon through the crossbore hole and attached the escutcheon to the mounting plate using the included bolts. Next, I attached the cables to the interior escutcheon, secured it to the mounting plate, and installed the battery pack.

Next, I opened the app, tapped Add Device, and selected the Veno Pro. I confirmed that the lock was already installed, selected my Wi-Fi SSID, and entered my Wi-Fi password. I pressed the Program button on the lock once to enable pairing mode, and it immediately connected. I gave the lock a name, created a master PIN code, and added a palm vein ID when prompted. To do this, I tapped Start, held my palm three inches from the scanner, and it was immediately registered. Next, I followed the instructions to register a fingerprint, which requires eight separate scans of the same fingerprint. After a five-minute firmware update, the installation was complete.

Using the app’s Matter Integration menu option, I prepared the lock for binding with Alexa via my Matter-enabled Amazon Echo Show and followed the instructions to pair the device with my Alexa account. It should be noted that the Veno Pro was not yet Matter certified at the time of this review, and I received an error message stating this during the pairing. However, I hit Continue, and it was successfully added via Matter. To add the lock to my Apple Home account, I copied the Setup code from the Alexa menu, pasted it into the Apple Add Device menu, and it was immediately linked.

The Veno Pro is a solid performer. In my testing, palm vein images and fingerprints were easy to register, and scans were instantly recognized. The touch-screen keypad was responsive, and I had no trouble locking and unlocking the door using Siri and Alexa voice commands. My Alexa routine to have the door lock when a Ring Outdoor Cam Plus detected motion worked perfectly, and the auto-lock and temporary passcode features worked as intended.

I was similarly impressed with the video doorbell. The image quality was sharp, and the color was excellent. Motion alerts were correctly identified and arrived quickly. The recorded video arrived instantly and was just as sharp and colorful as the live stream.

My Experience

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Technology I Use

I do all of my writing on my aging but trusty Lenovo Thinkpad T460.

At home I have two wireless networks running: one for streaming, gaming, and other day-to-day networking tasks, and another for testing all sorts of smart home devices including smart plugs and switches, lighting, indoor and outdoor security cameras, home security systems, air conditioners, smart grills, robotic lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and whatever else finds its way to my door.

It’s not uncommon to find people standing in front of my house taking video of a robotic lawn mower traversing my lawn during the summer months. Now if only someone would come up with a robotic snow blower, I’d be all set.
