With bars, clubs, theaters, and other venues closed to the public, performers are among the most economically vulnerable right now. Which is why Spotify launched a new initiative to support members of the music community.
The Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project recommends verified organizations that offer financial relief to those most in need. Simply click the donate button below the organization of your choice to give directly to their cause. Spotify will match public contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to $10 million. Early partners include Help Musicians, MusiCares, and PRS Foundation, with more "coming soon."
"Though streaming continues to play a key role in connecting creators with their fans, numerous other sources of revenue have been interrupted or stopped altogether by this crisis," a Spotify blog post said. "Combatting the impact of this pandemic on the music industry will take a massive global effort, and we are working quickly to assemble and optimize these new resources."
The streaming platform is currently working on a feature that enables artists to fundraise directly from fans—for themselves, another entertainer in need, or a separate initiative—via their Spotify profile page. "In addition, we've made contributions to public health organizations and donated ad inventory and platform space to share news and health information with our users," according to the company. "We've also created a dedicated COVID-19 hub providing our listeners with a go-to place for news and information."
