An inexpensive printer that covers all bases is the best way to go for most students returning to school. Any of these MFPs should do the trick.
As the summer fun slowly comes to an end it's time to start to think about what you (or your favorite student) need before heading back to school. For most students, a reasonably priced multifunction printer (MFP) is a good choice.
MFPs can handle a variety of needs such as printing, scanning, copying, and faxing—some MFPs don't have faxing capabilities (which shouldn't be a critical omission for most students). Most inkjets, including all the MFPs featured here, are more than adequate for casual photo printing. Photography and graphic arts students in need of a printer to output their projects should consider springing for a high-end single-function photo printer such as the Epson Stylus Photo R2880. You can use it for printing text as well, but that's sort of like buying a Maserati to take on trips to the supermarket. If you want a portable photo printer to output snapshots for friends, the Epson PictureMate Show is a good choice, and even doubles as a digital photo frame.
But for students with more general needs, such as printing a paper or scanning a document into a report, any of the MFPs below will do the job without breaking the bank.
