Amazon is in the news again this week with the unveiling of the new, cheaper Kindle DX.

Available in Graphite, the new version of the large screen electronic reading device offers 50 percent more contrast for clearer text and sharper images. It's also cheaper, too: $379, versus the former $489 price, which follows the recent price cuts on the Kindle 2.

Like the previous version, it has an auto-rotating screen which automatically changes the display into landscape mode when you turn the device, useful for viewing full width maps and large images. Other features include free global 3G wireless, Whispersync technology that keeps the last position read synchronized across Kindle apps on all platforms, and native PDF document viewing support. It is just over one-third of an inch thick, making it roughly the same thickness as most magazines.

The new Kindle DX in Graphite will be released on July 7, and Amazon is currently accepting pre-orders on the company's web site.
