The beast that is Apple is infiltrating American homes by way of its iPhones, iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and other now-iconic products. According to a CNBC survey, more than half (51 percent) of U.S. households own at least one Apple product.

That comes to 55 million homes with some kind of Apple gadget, and that number is expected to grow. A quarter of respondents said they plan to buy an Apple device in the next year, and the average household has 1.6 Apple devices.

Apple consumers skew male, college-educated, and on the younger side, CNBC said. It also found that the more money you make, the more Apple goods you're likely to own. Just 28 percent of people making $30,000 year own at least one device, but for those making $75,000 or more, that stat climbs to 77 percent. Higher income homes own, on average, three Apple devices, while lower income have 0.6 products.

There isn't as much of a divide when it comes to age. Sixty-three percent of people 18-34 and those 35-49 identified themselves as Apple owners. But that decreases for the over 50 set. Half of those 50-64 own Apple devices and 26 percent of those older than 65 fall into that category.

Apple recently released its third-gen iPad, and at least 3 million people snapped up the device in its first weekend on the market. For more, see PCMag's full review of the new iPad and the slideshow below.
