Pros & Cons

The Intel Express 420T is a standalone, high-performance, (mostly) unmanaged switch with high port density. This small 1U device boasts 48 auto-negotiating 10/100 ports and two GBIC slots.

The 420T is a great choice for network administrators who want to achieve high network performance for their desktop PCs without the added cost of a full-featured managed switch. Its only management is done by console via the rear-mounted serial port; administrators can configure the port speed, duplex, and flow control. Having the serial port in the front would be more desirable, but this switch is really made to be plug and play. As on the higher-end Intel switches, the 420T's main shortcoming is its poor array of status LEDs, which makes it difficult to know which ports are active.
