If you’re looking for decorative smart lighting that has the look of an old-time incandescent bulb, check out the Pure Smart A19F Tunable White Filament Bulb from PureEdge Lighting. With an adjustable white temperature range of 2,000K to 4,000K, the Tunable White Filament Bulb can display warm yellowish or cool bluish light. It supports voice controls and works with IFTTT applets that enable integration with third-party smart home devices, and its $24 price is reasonable. That said, it doesn’t offer multi-color hues or work with Apple’s HomeKit or Matter like our Editors’ Choice for smart bulbs, the $16.99 AiDot Linkind Matter Smart Light Bulb

Design and Features: Contemporary Perks With a Retro Aesthetic

The Pure Smart A19F Tunable White Filament Bulb is a clear polycarbonate light bulb with thin LED strips inside that resemble a traditional filament bulb when lit. It measures 4.0 by 2.4 inches (HW) and has an A19 shape and an E26 screw-in base. It’s a white-only bulb that puts out 800 lumens of brightness and offers a tunable color temperature range of 2,000K to 4,000K. By comparison, its RGB sibling, the 800-lumen Pure Smart TruColor A19 smart bulb, has a wider tunable white color range of 1,500K to 6,500K, while the colorful AiDot Linkind Matter Smart Light Bulb offers a white temperature range of 2,700K to 6,500K.

The bulb doesn't require a hub and instead uses built-in Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radios to connect to your home network and the WiZ Connected mobile app (available for Android and iOS). It supports Alexa, Google, and SmartThings home automation platforms, but as is the case with the Pure Smart TruColor Bulb, it doesn't work with Apple’s HomeKit platform or Matter.

The Filament Bulb uses the same Wiz Connected app as the Pure Smart TruColor Bulb. When you open the app, tap the room where you have the bulb installed. This launches a room screen with six Quick Control buttons. The Control button takes you to a screen where you can manually adjust the bulb’s color temperature and brightness using sliders, choose a warm or cool preset, and create your own color temperature preset. At the bottom of this screen are more buttons: Static opens a screen with more presets, including Cozy, Focus, Night Light, Relax, and TV Time. The Dynamic button takes you to a screen with lighting effects, including Alarm, Bedtime, Candlelight, Diwali, Golden White, Pulse, Steampunk, and Wake-Up.

To view energy usage reports, tap the three lines in the upper right corner of the home screen and scroll down to the Energy Consumption tab. Here, you can view hourly, daily, and weekly usage statistics.

Installation and Performance: Speedy and Dependable

Installation is speedy and simple. I already had the Wiz Connected app installed, but if this is your first Pure Smart device, you’ll have to download the app, create an account, and set up a home. I screwed the bulb into a lamp fixture, tapped the plus icon in the upper right corner of the home screen, and selected Bulb from the list of devices. I selected the room where I installed the bulb, turned the lamp off for five seconds, and when I turned it back on, the bulb was immediately discovered. I selected it, entered my Wi-Fi credentials, and gave the bulb a name to complete the installation. The bulb was automatically added to my Alexa account as well.

The Pure Smart A19F Tunable White Filament Bulb is a solid performer. Warm whites appeared appropriately yellow, and cool whites presented a pleasing bluish hue. The bulb responded instantly to on/off controls and color temperature changes using Alexa voice commands and the Wiz Connected app. It followed my schedules without issue, and the lighting effects worked as intended. I created an Alexa routine to have the bulb turn on when a Eufy E340 Floodlight detected motion, and it worked perfectly.

My Experience

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Technology I Use

I do all of my writing on my aging but trusty Lenovo Thinkpad T460.

At home I have two wireless networks running: one for streaming, gaming, and other day-to-day networking tasks, and another for testing all sorts of smart home devices including smart plugs and switches, lighting, indoor and outdoor security cameras, home security systems, air conditioners, smart grills, robotic lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and whatever else finds its way to my door.

It’s not uncommon to find people standing in front of my house taking video of a robotic lawn mower traversing my lawn during the summer months. Now if only someone would come up with a robotic snow blower, I’d be all set.
