Philips makes some of our favorite smart light bulbs, but its Hue LEDs are also some of the priciest we've tested. Starting at just $9.97, the Philips Dimmable A19 Smart Wi-Fi Wiz Light Bulb is a far more affordable option you can control from anywhere using the Wiz smartphone app. It offers ample features for the price, including support for IFTTT integrations and voice control via Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts. Its companion app lets you create Scenes to set the mood for different occasions with the press of a button, Rhythms to automate lighting adjustments based on the time of day, and Schedules to enable your preferred light mode on certain days and times. Minor Wi-Fi hiccups hold it back from earning an Editors' Choice nod, but this bulb is still a strong choice if you're looking to start building a smart home

Price and Features

You might be unfamiliar with the Wiz line, but you've probably heard of Philips' sister brand Hue. Wiz is essentially a lower-cost alternative to Hue, with the main difference being the back-end technology and protocols they use. Hue is based on Bluetooth and Zigbee, while Wiz uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

There are a number of Philips bulbs to choose from (both in the Hue and Wiz lines), but the one I tested here is called the Soft White A19 LED 60W Equivalent Dimmable Smart Wi-Fi Wiz Connected Wireless Light Bulb. It delivers 800 lumens of brightness, which is roughly equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent bulb, and it has a 2700K (warm) color temperature. Intended for indoor use only, it's 5.71 inches tall, 2.83 inches wide, and has an E26 base that will fit any standard lamp socket. Philips says it's rated to last 25,000 hours, or around 22 years when used three hours per day, on average.

A single bulb costs $9.97, or you can get a two-pack for $19.94 or a four-pack for $39.88. If the warm-toned Soft White color isn't your jam, the bulb also comes in a cooler Daylight color temperature for the same price, as well as Tunable White and Color Changing options, priced at $11.97 and $12.97 for a single bulb, respectively.

It's a bit pricier than the Wyze Bulb, our Editors' Choice in this category, which costs $7.99 or $29.99 for a four-pack. The Wyze Bulb also features built-in Wi-Fi, plays nicely with Alexa and Google Assistant, offers scheduling options, and lets you create Scenes. It doesn't offer the Siri voice control, dynamic lighting effects, or automated Rhythms you get with the Philips Wiz (more on these features in a bit), but it has a 2700K to 6500K color temperature range so you tune it warmer or cooler.

Setting Up Philips Wiz Bulbs

To set up the Philips Wiz bulb, you first need to download the Wiz app (available for Android and iOS), give it permission to discover and connect to devices on your Wi-Fi network, and accept the Terms of Use. From there, you can create a home, join a home, or log in with an existing Wiz account. It isn't compatible with the Philips Hue app.

Since I'm new to the Wiz ecosystem, I chose to create a home. When doing so, you give your home a name (I went with the default My Home), give the app permission to find your new lights via Bluetooth, and press the plus sign at the top of the app to add a new room to your home. Once you set up a room, press Add a Device > Light, then enter your Wi-Fi password.

You then have the option to do a smart or manual pairing. With the smart pairing option, you can set up several lights at once; the manual pairing option only lets you deal with one at a time. Since I was just setting up one, I went with the manual pairing option. The app instructs you to power off your lights, then quickly turn them on three times, after which the bulb should pulse in blue/cool light.

After doing this, my light wasn't pulsing, so I went back and tried the smart pairing option. For this method, you turn the lights off, then on, then the app displays a 60-second countdown timer while searching for them. Unfortunately, the app was still searching for my bulb after the minute was up. I waited a bit longer and it didn't seem to be working, so I force-closed the app, then reopened it, and the light was connected.

Controlling the Bulb

Once you get your bulb connected, you'll see five tabs at the bottom of the Wiz app: Home, Scenes, Rhythms, Schedules, and Settings.

In Home, you see any rooms you've created, and all the bulbs set up in each room. When you click on a bulb, you'll see its name at the top of the app. The Home tab features On, Off, and Night Light buttons that let you quickly control your connected bulb. There's also a dimmer slider to adjust its brightness.

Philips WiZ app screens

This bulb supports a few dynamic lighting effects, including Candlelight, which flickers; Pulse, which fades in and out; and Steampunk, which flashes every so often for a vintage vibe. For the latter two, you can control the speed of the effect using a slider with a tortoise on one side and a hare on the other. The app also offers Wake-up and Bedtime options that gradually get brighter or dimmer, respectively, over 30 minutes.

In Scenes, you can save the current status of your lights to quickly tune them the same way in the future. To add a Scene, just press the plus sign in the upper right corner, select the room, name your Scene, snap a photo of the lighting to help you remember what it looks like, then press Create This Scene. Then, when you want to tune your lighting that way in the future, just press the play button on that Scene. With the iOS app, you can also create a custom Siri shortcut phrase for that Scene.

In Rhythms, you can enable a Circadian Rhythm setting that provides the best-suited lighting throughout the day according to your wakeup and bedtime routine. You can also create a custom Rhythm that will automatically enable selected light modes at a designated time. You can add up to five light points when creating a custom Rhythm.

More WiZ screens

In Schedules, you can program your connected bulbs to perform certain actions, such as turning on or off, on designated days and times. You can, for instance, create a morning Schedule that enables Wake-up mode starting at 7:30 a.m. every weekday. There's also a Vacation Mode option designed to simulate presence at home in the morning and evening when you're away.

In Settings, you can create a new home, add rooms to your home, edit the lights in each room, invite other people to join your home so they can control the lights, view your energy consumption, access how-to videos, and chat with someone from help support. You can also enable and manage integrations with Amazon Alexa, Alice, Conrad Connect, Enki, IFTTT, ImperiHome, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. With IFTTT, you can program your bulb to react based on your location, the weather, Facebook notifications, and more.

If you have the Alexa app on your phone, it takes just a few taps to link it with Wiz. After doing so, you can control your lights with voice commands such as, "Alexa, turn on the light," "Alexa, turn the light to warm white," or "Alexa, dim down the light."

Performance

I installed the bulb in my office lamp, and created a "work" Scene in the Wiz app that tunes the light to its brightest setting with the press of a button. I also created a Scene that turns the light off, and both worked without issue. I then created Siri shortcuts to run the appropriate Scene when I told the virtual assistant, "Turn on my work light," or "Turn off my work light," and this feature also worked as expected. After linking Wiz with Amazon Alexa, I had no problem controlling the bulb with voice commands via my Echo smart speaker.

That said, I had some trouble controlling the bulb via the app's Home menu. At times, I would press the On or Off button or adjust the brightness slider and the bulb wouldn't respond, or would only do so after a delay. When it completely failed to respond, I could always get it to work by either switching to a different section of the app, or force-closing it and trying again.

Conclusions

Starting at just $9.97 per bulb, the Philips Dimmable A19 Smart Wi-Fi Wiz bulb offers loads of value and convenience for its low price. It works with Wi-Fi for app control without needing a separate hub, it supports voice commands, and it features plenty of customization options, including the ability to create lighting Scenes and Schedules. Aside from some minor Wi-Fi connectivity issues, which were easily overcome, there's little to dislike about this bulb. Overall, it's an excellent smart dimmable Wi-Fi LED bulb for the price, but it falls a bit shy of the Wyze Bulb, our Editors' Choice in this price range, which costs less ($7.99 per bulb) and features adjustable white color temperatures, but lacks Siri control and dynamic lighting effects.

My Experience

I'm PCMag's managing editor for consumer electronics, overseeing an experienced team of analysts covering smart home, home entertainment, wearables, fitness and health tech, and various other product categories. I have been with PCMag for more than 10 years, and in that time have written more than 6,000 articles and reviews for the site. I previously served as an analyst focused on smart home and wearable devices, and before that I was a reporter covering consumer tech news. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade.

Prior to joining PCMag, I was a reporter for SC Magazine, focusing on hackers and computer security. I earned a BS in journalism from West Virginia University, and started my career writing for newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes.

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app.

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth.

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light.

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
