If you are an iPhone user who has wished for more AI-editing tools within the Photos app, we have some good news. With iOS 27, Apple will revamp the app’s Edit window and add three new AI-powered editing tools, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Just to jog your memory, the Edit window in Apple’s native Photos app currently offers options like Adjust, Filters, Crop, and Clean Up. With its upcoming overhaul, Clean Up will reportedly move to a new section called “Apple Intelligence Tools,” where it will join new entrants Extend, Enhance, and Reframe.
Extend, as the name suggests, lets users expand a photo beyond its original borders by generating matching content. Users can, for example, click the photo of a landmark and use Extend to add additional scenery around it. They will be able to control the artificial portion by manually expanding or contracting the image's edges, Gurman says.
Enhance does a much simpler task. It uses AI to automatically adjust color, lighting, and image quality. Apple Photos already offers a similar option in Edit > Adjust. The first tool here, Auto, automatically adjusts the lighting in an image, and it is unclear how Enhance will differ.
Finally, Gurman says Apple will add a tool called Reframe. It’s primarily designed for 3D spatial photos and allows users to shift the image's point of focus. For example, a photo showing the front of the car can be edited to show its side.
Apple will use on-device AI to process these edits, and the three new tools will reportedly be available on Apple Intelligence-supported devices running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Initial tests for the Extend and Reframe tools haven’t yielded favorable results, so Apple may have to delay those features, sources tell Gurman.
The company is already under pressure to deliver the Siri features it promised two years ago. At this year’s WWDC, scheduled to take place between June 8 and 12, Apple’s primary focus will be on rolling out the upgraded Siri and boosting overall performance, Gurman adds.
