Montana is the latest state to support driver's licenses and state IDs in the Apple Wallet app.
Residents can now add their IDs to the Wallet app and present them for verification at select TSA checkpoints and for certain age-restricted purchases at participating businesses. While you can keep your ID on both an iPhone and an Apple Watch, it can be added only from an iPhone.
To add a digital ID in the Wallet app, tap the + (plus) sign at the top right, select the type of ID and your state, and follow the on-screen instructions to scan the front and back of your ID. You'll also be asked to take a selfie to prove it's really you, after which your application will be sent to the state for verification.
Once approved, your ID will appear in the Wallet app. You can open it and hold your device near a TSA reader to get through. Digital IDs are now supported at over 250 airports, including Montana's Helena Regional Airport (HLN), TSA says in a press release.
Additionally, as MacRumors reports, digital IDs can be verified at participating businesses in Montana. These businesses can verify IDs through the state's Montana Mobile ID Verifier app for iOS and Android. By the end of the year, the Montana Highway Patrol will also accept digital IDs, the report adds.
Though mobile IDs bring convenience, both TSA and Montana MVD say that citizens "must continue to carry and have readily available their physical driver's license," as officials may require it to complete verification.
Montana is the 10th state to support digital IDs in Wallet after Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, and Ohio. You can also add them for Puerto Rico. According to MacRumors, Mississippi, Illinois, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia are also preparing to adopt the feature.
