Sony Prepares to Invite Consumers to Pre-Order the PlayStation 5

The new web page on the official Playstation website suggests the PS5 will arrive this holiday season in limited supplies. Existing PS4 owners can sign up for an invite to pre-order, but not all will necessarily receive one.

Sony is preparing invite-only pre-orders for the PlayStation 5, although the price to the console still remains a mystery.

The company plans on notifying interested US-based customers about PS5 pre-order availability via email, according to a new webpage on the official PlayStation website.

“There will be a limited quantity of PS5 consoles available for pre-order, so we will be inviting some of our existing consumers to be one of the first to pre-order one from PlayStation,” the page says.

“Pre-order reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis, so once you get an invite via email, we encourage you to follow instructions and act fast,” it goes on to add.

To receive an invite, the webpage asks existing PlayStation owners to type in their PlayStation Online ID into a form. However, not everyone will necessarily receive an invite for the pre-orders.

“If selected, we will contact you via email before pre-orders start. If you do not receive an email, you were not selected,” the page says.

The cryptic statements suggest the PS5 will arrive this holiday season in short supply. An FAQ for the pre-order process also says Sony will determine who gets an invite based on “previous interests and PlayStation activities." So it’ll probably favor players who log a lot of time on their PS4.

If you do receive an invite, you’ll be limited to purchase either one standard PS5 console, or one PS5 digital edition, which nixes the 4K Blu-ray player. You'll also be able to buy the controllers, wireless headset and other official peripherals for the system.

If you don't receive an invite, the good news is that other retailers plan on selling the console. Outside of Sony, you can register to learn about PS5 pre-order news via third-party dealers such as Best Buy, Walmart and GameStop.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • My first video game console: a Nintendo Famicom
  • I loved my Sega Saturn despite PlayStation's popularity.
  • The iPod Video I received as a gift in college
  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
