In a surprise Nintendo Direct today, it has been revealed that Square Enix is set to resurrect a trio of classic Game Boy games later this year for the Switch to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the SaGa series.

Final Fantasy Legend, better known in its home territory of Japan under the SaGa name, was the first Game Boy RPG to sell over a million units. Now, on the 30th anniversary of the series, Square Enix is re-releasing the first three Game Boy games on the Nintendo Switch as the Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend. This counts as the first "complete port" of the titles according to Square Enix, although there have been various tweaked ports of the three games over the years, spread across the WonderSwan Color, Nintendo DS, and smartphones.

As Polygon reports, Final Fantasy Legend, Legend 2, and Legend 3 will be included along with a number of enhancements for Switch owners. There will be a high-speed mode, adjustable screen magnification, game screen background customization, and compatibility with both handheld and TV modes. It will also be possible to rotate the Switch and play each game vertically with the Joy-Cons not attached if you so wish.

Digital pre-purchasing for the collection will be available from today, but even though these are just the Game Boy games with a few enhancements, Square Enix is making us wait until Dec. 15 to play them. It's unclear why there's such a long delay between announcing and releasing the collection, but it will at least offer gamers some fresh nostalgia over the Christmas period. It shouldn't take long to download them either as the total size of the collection is just 219MB.
