Stadia arrived last fall with limited features, and it now looks like Google wants to attract users who might've ignored the game streaming platform due to that.
Google, according to The Verge, introduced a promotional campaign that distributes three-month Stadia Pro trials to some owners of the Chromecast Ultra. Normally it sells for $9.99 per month, but Google sees growing the platform's player base as a priority. Early adopters saw their three-month Stadia Pro trials expire in mid-February, and it's unclear how many of them decided to renew and start paying for the service. Stadia needs a large, reliable player base to prove its concept and populate online matches.
Recipients don't need to do all that much to get their three-month trial. If you use the Chromecast Ultra and opt-in to promotional emails, you'll likely receive a code. However, Stadia isn't available in many countries. Google still limits the platform to fourteen countries and regions. So don't expect a code if you're not located in an area where Stadia is offered.
In terms of Stadia Pro and its benefits, you'll earn a catalog of games such as Destiny 2 and Grid that don't require separate purchases. Stadia Pro also includes 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, 5.1 surround sound, and discounts on select titles. Google will roll out Stadia Base, a free tier, later this year. Of course, it's Stadia Pro that'll generate the most revenue. The goal is that, by distributing three-month trials, consumers will try Stadia, love its versatility, and sign up for the paid subscription.
You'll need the Chromecast Ultra to play on a TV, but Stadia also supports the Chrome web browser and a handful of Android devices.
