Tesla has expanded its robotaxi service to Dallas and Houston. The autonomous ride-hailing service debuted in Austin last June and is now operational in three cities, all located in Texas.
Tesla confirmed the rollout in an X post on Sunday, along with maps of operational areas in both cities. Unlike in Austin, where commercial rides initially had a human supervisor behind the wheel, rides in Dallas and Houston are completely unsupervised from the get-go. Some X users have shared videos of their rides in Dallas and Houston.
The brand didn’t share any information about the fleet, pricing, or operating hours in these cities. You can download the Tesla Robotaxi app on iOS to check availability and book rides.
According to Robotaxi Tracker, a site that aggregates publicly available data on robotaxi operations, Tesla has just one robotaxi each in Dallas and Houston, while it has a fleet of 46 Model Ys in Austin. We expect the numbers to get updated as the service grows in the newly added cities.
Google-owned Waymo, Tesla’s biggest rival in this segment, began offering commercial rides in Dallas and Houston earlier this year. In Dallas, Tesla will face stiffer competition, as Uber already offers AV rides using Avride’s fleet, while Amazon is preparing to launch its Zoox robotaxi service in the city. Testing for Amazon’s Zoox vehicles is already underway.
Tesla’s self-driving taxis could reach a total of eight cities by the end of this year. The company’s January earnings report hinted at an expansion involving Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas. We may get an update on that when the company reports its latest earnings on April 22.
