The upcoming iPhone 17 and some other major Android phones could offer faster wireless charging speeds, thanks to the new Qi2 25W charging standard announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).

The standard was first confirmed in April, when the WPC referred to it as Version 2.2 on its website. It has been anticipated for quite some time, and when compared to the existing Qi2 standard from 2023, it delivers nearly 70% more power.

"The momentum building behind the next stage in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible," said Fady Mishriki, chair of the WPC's Board of Directors. "Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The number of devices in the Qi2 25W certification queue for launch is unprecedented, as is the quality and breadth of our members product designs."

Fourteen devices have received the new Qi2 25W certification so far, the WPC said. We saw some of them listed on the website last week, including wireless chargers from brands like UGreen and Belkin. Last month, 91Mobiles also leaked images of two updated Apple MagSafe charging pucks, which suggested the new standard was imminent.

In its press release, the WPC confirmed that iPhones would support Qi2 25W, but didn't specify which ones. The iPhone 16 series already supports the 15W Qi2 standard and can achieve speeds of up to 25W with a MagSafe charger. According to The Verge, since Apple's MagSafe tech helped build the Qi2 standard, both the iPhone 16 and the upcoming iPhone 17 series could support Qi2 25W.

When it comes to Android, the HMD Skyline is the only phone that fully supports the Qi2 standard right now. The OnePlus 13Samsung Galaxy S25 series, and the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7 are referred to as "Qi 2 Ready," but they require users to buy an additional magnetic Qi2 case to support the standard fully.

That's about to change, according to the WPC. "In addition to Apple iPhone, major Android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch," it said, without naming the phones.
