OpenAI, in partnership with Common Sense Media, has launched a free online course to help teachers understand how ChatGPT can be integrated into their workflows.

The one-hour, nine-lesson course begins with the basics of AI, moves on to the ChatGPT prompts teachers can use to boost productivity, and ends with frameworks for using the chatbot responsibly.

Although most of the course encourages teachers to use the chatbot, one chapter does acknowledge AI's limitations. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT shouldn't be used to instruct on lab experiments or provide personalized attention and emotional support to students. Sharing sensitive student data with the chatbot is also not advised.

The course was piloted in dozens of schools, and nearly 98% of the participants found new ideas or strategies they could apply, OpenAI tells TechCrunch.

Educators can sign up for the free course on the Common Sense Media website. It's the first collaboration between the two companies, with more to come.

"Schools across the country are grappling with new opportunities and challenges as AI reshapes education, with our research showing that seven in 10 students are already using tools like ChatGPT for their schoolwork," says Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense. "With this course, we are taking a proactive approach to support and educate teachers on the front lines and prepare for this transformation."
