Mark the calendar, gamers: Sony is expected to unveiled its next-gen PlayStation on Sept. 7.

An event is being held at the PlayStation Theatre in New York City at 3 p.m. ET, according to the stark invitation.

Sony did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment, but told The Verge it will "share details about the PlayStation business." It remains unclear whether that includes a console release date or price.

Rumors of a new PS4, codenamed "Neo," began swirling in March when The Wall Street Journal teased a new PlayStation that could more effectively handle virtual reality content.

April reports tipped a $399 price tag and a new gaming mode intended to take advantage of super-charged specs, like a higher clock speed, improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory.

Over the summer, Sony Interactive Entertainment head Andrew House confirmed the news, telling the Financial Times that the new machine will "sit alongside and complement the standard PS4."

Come this fall, developers will be required to ship games with a "base mode" that works on the existing PS4 and a "Neo mode" that taps into the updated console's specs. Game makers can't create Neo-only titles, but may upgrade existing ones to work with the new software.

The new and old PS4 will support Sony's upcoming virtual reality headset, which arrives in October and requires a tethered PlayStation 4.

Sony in May celebrated more than 40 million PlayStation 4 units sold worldwide, about six months after topping 30 million in sales.

Rival Microsoft, meanwhile, last week released the Xbox One S—slimmer and more powerful than its predecessor, boasting a 2TB hard drive, HDMI 2.0a connectivity for 4K video support, and an overclocked 914MHz AMD Radeon GPU.

But don't expect to pick one up any time soon. Eurogamer this week reported that the white 2TB model has already sold out, and Redmond has no plans to replenish its stock. A limited selection of the Gears of War-themed special edition will arrive in October.
