New reports about a rumored PlayStation 4 upgrade tip a $399 price tag and a new gaming mode intended to take advantage of super-charged specs.

Citing anonymous sources, Giant Bomb suggests the "PS4.5," internally known as NEO, "will feature a higher clock speed than the original PS4, an improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory."

Come October, developers will be required to ship games with a "base mode" that works on the existing PS4 and a "NEO mode" that taps into the updated console's specs, Giant Bomb says. Game makers will not be able to create "NEO-only" games, but they can upgrade existing titles to work with NEO via a software patch.

As a result, existing PS4 owners won't have to worry about missing out on certain games if they don't upgrade to the NEO. Those who buy in, however, will reportedly get an "increased and more stable frame rate and higher visual fidelity, at least when those games run at 1080p on HDTVs," Giant Bomb reports.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that a higher-end PS4, which could more effectively handle 4K content and virtual reality, was in the works. The device, according to the paper, would likely be announced before Sony launches its PlayStation VR headset in October, which requires a tethered PS4.

Sony did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.
