Sprint on Wednesday confirmed that it will offer unlimited data for the iPhone 4S, and on Thursday the company began taking preorders for the iPhone 4.

This is the first time Sprint has carried the iPhone.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S, Apple’s fifth-gen smartphone, don’t start until October 7.

Apple on Tuesday announced the iPhone 4S at a press event in Cupertino. While it appears to be the same device as the iPhone 4, Apple has completely revamped the inside, adding a dual-core A5 processor, super-charged camera, Siri voice controls, and iOS 5.

A Sprint spokeswoman noted yesterday that out of the three U.S. carriers that have the iPhone, Sprint is the only one that offers unlimited data. Plans start at $69.99 per month plus a $10 premium data add-on charge. Unlimited data, calling, and text will cost $99.99 a month, with the additional $10 data charge.

Verizon and AT&T will also carry the iPhone 4S, which will go on sale in the U.S. on October 14. These carriers, however, do not offer unlimited data. AT&T ditched unlimited data in June 2010, and Verizon nixed this option in July of this year.

If you’re planning to upgrade to the iPhone 4S from your existing iPhone, a few places are offering trade-in options. Apple will give up to $200 in the form of a gift certificate. eBay is also doling out more than $300  for old iPhones in some cases, and BuyMyTronics is also offering a maximum of $200.
