If Twitter were a country, it would be slightly smaller than the United States. According to data from tweet-watching site Twopcharts, Twitter now has more than 300 million registered accounts.

Officially Twitter says it has more than 200 million registered accounts, with about half a million new accounts created every day. While 300 million might actually be an accurate figure, it doesn't represent the number of users who are actually active on the site.

Earlier this year, Azeem Azhar, founder of Twitter analytics tool PeerIndex, told PCMag that out of the official 200 million registered users, it's likely that only 25 million accounts are actually active, and only sevent million of those handles are "meaningfully active."

But it's undeniable that Twitter's growth is increasingly aggressive. Founded five years ago, Twitter is now supported in nine different languages, three of which (Korean, Russian, and Turkish) were added this year. Twitter also recently added 70 more cities and countries to Trends, bringing the total number of locations for which the service monitors the hottest topics to more than 100.

If you tweet regularly, you are part of the 140 million tweets Twitter has said are sent out every day. That's a total of one billion tweets sent about every eight days. To put that figure into perspective, it took more than three years for Twitter to hit a billion tweets for the first time.

It's not just the user base that is growing; it's the entire Twitter ecosystem. The company recently announced at its #devnest event that it gets more than 13 billion API requests a day. It also divulged that there are more than 600,000 developers working on apps that integrate Twitter, and there are more than 900,000 apps out there that use Twitter in some way.

At time of publication, Twopcharts counted 300,910,654 registered Twitter accounts, with 8.9 new handles created every second. Twitter, however, did not immediately respond for a request for comment on the numbers.
