Apple reportedly wants to refocus its energies in the augmented reality space and put more of its effort into its upcoming smart glasses.
According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple told its employees last week that it would be moving some members of its team who had been working on a sequel to the Vision Pro. Apple said they will be moved to the smart glasses project.
Previous rumors have suggested Apple has plans for two different devices, including a pair of glasses referred to internally as the N50. These will pair with an iPhone and won’t include a screen inside. They'll instead use microphones, built-in cameras, and AI to interact directly with your iPhone.
The sources say Apple initially planned to announce these smart glasses in 2026, and release them in 2027. This change in priorities may see it speed up development.
There’s also a device with a display built-in, according to Bloomberg. Apple is reportedly aiming to "accelerate development," which it had initially planned to launch in 2028.
This likely comes after Meta’s latest announcement with its new Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses. These glasses feature an in-lens display, and are proving Meta has a good foothold in the augmented reality space.
If this report is true, it may mean we have to wait longer for a fully revamped Apple Vision Pro sequel. Previous reports have claimed Apple is working on a lighter headset that’s more comfortable to wear for longer periods.
However, the change in focus may not impact a rumored upcoming refresh of the headset. That product was spotted by MacRumors in regulatory findings this week, which is often a sign of an imminent release. Reports suggest it may launch before the end of 2025.
Bloomberg's sources have said this is likely a "modest refresh" rather than an overhaul of the Vision Pro. Some reports suggest it may feature a more powerful M5 processor.
