Hollywood studios turning movies and TV shows into video games is nothing new. How better to attract eyeballs (and dollars) than to capitalize on the popularity of beloved characters?
Netflix has experimented with gaming since 2021, and some of its franchises have already received the video game treatment. It's now looking to further mine its catalogue and turn shows like Squid Game and Wednesday into games, The Wall Street Journal reports. Extraction and Black Mirror are also possible contenders.
The video-streaming service reportedly wants to expand beyond mobile gaming and attract new gamers by offering titles that can be streamed on a TV or PC, the Journal says. Currently, the library of Netflix games includes exclusives and licensed content from other studios.
One potentially eye-catching licensing deal might bring a Grand Theft Auto title to Netflix. The company has had discussions with Take-Two Interactive about it, but nothing is official, according to the Journal.
For now, the idea is to offer Netflix subscribers something to focus on while they wait for the next season of their favorite shows. (There's also a Squid Game reality show, if that's your thing.) As of last month, games on Netflix had been downloaded over 70.5 million times, though that's not a lot compared to other casual game franchises.
