Berlin's IFA trade show has now essentially come to a close, and we've learnt a lot more about the plans of various companies that exhibited. We're going to take some time to have a look at what's coming, and what products are most exciting.

Sony had plenty to say, but the whole thing basically boils down to some new phones, a tablet and some changes to smartwatches.

The firm has updates its SmartWatch range, with the third generation moving over to Android Wear. This is a great step forward for the firm, and will mean that apps will get greater prominence too. But Sony has also developed its own, which make the SmartWatch 3 a serious contender when compared to LG and Samsung's offerings.

Sony SmartBand Talk Notifications

Sony has also improved its activity tracker with the SmartBand Talk. It now has a screen, which uses e-ink technology to give you the time, and access to other information. It's very useful indeed, and a massive boost to activity trackers, which are mostly screen-free. It also has a speakerphone, for brief calls via Bluetooth.

There are also a pair of new phones, the Sony Xperia Z3 and the Z3 Compact. These handsets offer a lot of power with quad-core processors running at 2.5GHz. The Z3 has 3GB of memory, while the Compact has 2GB. Mostly though, the compact version and the full-sized one are pretty much the same spec. Sony is one of the few companies that makes a compact edition with the same power, and it's great to see.

Sony's new tablet follows the naming convention, although it's also a bit clumsy, it's officially titled the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and offers a 1200x1920 screen, and the same 2.5GHz processor that's in the Z3 phones along with 2GB of RAM.

Hands On: Sony's Xperia Z3 Series, Z3 Tablet Compact

Sony has also expressed a current lack of interest in quad-HD screens, claiming that they drain the battery too much and take more processor power to run. We can see the logic of that, and Sony says with a 1080 screen in the Z3 and a 720 screen in the Compact, both should see two day battery life.

The firm also announced the NW-A15 digital music player, which offers support for lossless and high-bitrate music. This is a massive boost for portable music, and the company's phone are also adding support for lossless music too, including the Z3 and Z3 compact.

It was a strong IFA for Sony, with lots of great hardware. The new SmartWatch has the potential to do great things for the firm's wearable sales, and the new phones offer plenty of great features.
