Many of us want to know about our roots, but trying to track them down can be overwhelming. Luckily, tools for exploring your family history have just gotten kicked up a notch with the release of Family Tree Maker 2008. This wonderfully simple software, which almost does your genealogy for you, syncs with genealogy Web site Ancestry.com (you definitely want a paid subscription to that site, too), bringing you the utmost experience in family history research. The latest incarnation of the product was built completely from scratch, unlike earlier versions, and is simpler and cleaner than previous releases. The resulting program is innovative and helpful, with all the tools home genealogists need.

Installation went smoothly, but once I tried to register my software and sync it with my Ancestry.com account, I encountered problems. Even after trying different machines and adjusting firewall settings, I had no luck with this crucial step. Without the link to Ancestry.com, the software is far less useful, because that's where you'll find the millions of records that you want to use to fill in missing branches of your family tree. The problem, according to company reps, was that there was a connectivity issue with some Internet providers (Comcast, in my case). Family Tree Maker 2008 : Getting Started

Family Tree Maker 2008 wastes no time in getting you started with your family tree. You can start by either by scratch, entering what information you have, or you can import from an existing file.

Family Tree Maker 2008 : People Tab

The People tab allows you to see the information you've entered in traditional family tree form. You can alter information either by entering it straight into the family tree, or using the information window on the right side of the screen.

Family Tree Maker 2008 : Individual Ancestors

The People tab allows you to view individual ancestors also. This person's information was entered by searching ancestry.com through Family Tree Maker, as can be seen in the source window.

Family Tree Maker 2008 : The Green Leaf

A green leaf often appears next to inputted names. The leaf denotes a match between information you've entered and ancestry.com.

Family Tree Maker 2008 : Places Menu

The Places menu in Family Tree Maker includes a plug-in with Microsoft Virtual Earth, so you can see the modern-day context of the cities your ancestors lived in.

Family Tree Maker 2008 : Saved Source Citations

Family Tree Maker automatically saves all the source citations for your information, whether you entered it yourself or synched with ancestry.com and added it to your family tree.

After you've completed your family tree, you can choose between three presentation layouts. You can quickly revert back to your family tree by using the mini family tree at the top of the window.

Once in the Web search menu, enable the web clipping feature. With this feature enabled, you can automatically save photos you find while searching the web just by clicking on them.
