Twitter Hit by Wednesday Night Outage

Twitter appears to be recovering from an outage that left thousands of global users without access to the website for hours.

According to status tracker Downdetector, Twitter went down just after 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with most users reporting outages on the website rather than the mobile app.

Within 30 minutes, Downdetector counted nearly 10,000 complaints. While many users were still able to use the platform, others received error messages that "something went wrong," urging folks to "try again," CNET reports. The volume of reports ebbed and flowed through the evening, and appeared to stabilize by 10:30 p.m.

London-based internet monitor NetBlocks took to Twitter (ironically) to confirm the outage; it was logging trouble on the mobile app, however, as well as features like notifications. The "incident [is] not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering," NetBlocks said.

As the hashtag #TwitterDown trended in the US, billionaire CEO Elon Musk shrugged off the issue, tweeting "Works for me" around 8:30 p.m. ET. A few hours later, he announced the rollout of "significant backend server architecture changes," promising that "Twitter should feel faster."

The company, which no longer has a communications department after mass layoffs and terminations in the last two months, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither the Twitter Support nor Twitter Communications teams posted any updates online.

Since taking over Twitter in October, Musk has upended the social network, delaying or pulling various features like paid verification, an "Official" label, and Twitter Blue. The firm, meanwhile, lost its chief information security officer, chief privacy officer, chief compliance officer, and several members of its privacy and security division over the last two months.
