Report: Fortnite Will Be Exclusive to Galaxy Note 9 (for 30 Days)

Exclusive game launches used to mean one platform gets a new title months before another, but Fortnite for Android looks set to be a limited time exclusive to just one smartphone when it launches in August. Samsung thinks it will help sell the Galaxy Note 9.

It looks as though Samsung may have secured itself a rather unusual exclusive for the Galaxy Note 9 in the form of Epic's extremely popular Fortnite game.

It's almost impossible not to have heard about Fortnite such is its popularity. The free-to-play game is already available on Windows, macOS, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and iOS, but Android still doesn't have a version. That's set to change very soon, but as 9To5Google reports, it looks as though Samsung has signed an exclusive deal to get it first.

Why would Samsung want Fortnite all to itself? Well, we are expecting the Galaxy Note 9 to launch on Aug. 9 at the Samsung Unpacked event. Samsung realizes how popular Fortnite is and how many Android users would like to play it on their phones, so Samsung clearly saw an opportunity and hopes to entice a few more Note 9 sales because of it.

The exclusivity deal is only expected to last 30 days before the game unlocks for all Android devices. What that means is, all Android users should be able to play it by the time we reach October. The unlock date will be decided by the launch date of the Note 9, which is expected to be Aug. 24.

I'm of the opinion that exclusives such as this are not great for consumers as they try and force you into buying a product you don't actually need simply to gain access to something else you want. The last time I remember a game exclusive annoying consumers was when Microsoft announced Rise of the Tomb Raider was launching exclusively on Xbox, with other platforms having to wait a year to play it.
