General Motors had previously revealed that it had an advertising campaign prepared should the concerns surround the safety of the Chevy Volt get any worse, and now the company has launched that campaign.

In a 33 second video, Volts are seen being assembled through the streets of Hamtramck, Michigan, where the extended range vehicle is manufactured. Meanwhile, a voiceover explains that "this isn't just the car we wanted to build, it's the car America had to build." There are no mentions of the recent safety concerns.

GM revealed that the campaign was completed and ready earlier this month, and after it had already made several moves to ensure customer trust in the safety of the Volt, including offering structural safety improvements to the battery casing. However, it recently came to light that a number of dealers were refusing to accept Volts for sale due to the ongoing concerns.

In addition to the new ads, GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson also testified before the US House Subcommittee to discuss the issues surrounding the Volt.

"Although we loaded the Volt with state-of-the-art safety features," Akerson explained, "we did not engineer the Volt to be a political punching bag. And that, sadly, is what it's become.

"For all of the loose talk about fires, we are here today because tests by regulators resulted in battery fires under lab conditions that no driver would experience in the real world. In fact, Volt customers have driven over 25 million miles without a single, similar incident."
