Square is working with Apple to enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for its sellers so they can accept contactless payments using Square's Point of Sale app on compatible iPhones.

Apple introduced Tap to Pay in February, inviting developers to integrate the feature into their iOS apps. Stripe is the first payment platform to use the functionality, opening it up to Shopify sellers. AmEx, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa contactless cards also work with the new system.

"Bringing Tap to Pay on iPhone into the Square ecosystem ensures that new sellers will have another free option to get up and running," said David Talach, head of financial services at Square. "While providing businesses of any complexity with more flexibility to adapt their commerce experiences to evolving customer preferences and changing industry standards."

Tap to Pay transactions are encrypted and protected using Secure Element. The system works on any iPhone from the iPhone XS onward and accepts Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets through a simple tap on an iPhone.

Apple hasn't announced an official Tap to Pay launch date, though it was spotted in action at the Apple Park Visitor Center last month. We may hear more about it at next week's WWDC.

"As a seasonal business that's always on the move, it's important to have an easy-to-use, reliable mobile option for taking payments," says Kona Ice Vacaville owner Teddy Rojas, a member of Square's Early Access Program. "With Tap to Pay on iPhone, I can process contactless payments quickly, even on cellular service...and it provides a really straightforward experience so new staff can easily get up and running on taking payments on an iPhone."

Space in the Early Access Program is limited; interested sellers can sign up online for more info.
