Meal kit delivery services remain one of the easiest ways to start healthier diets, especially prepared meal services that don’t require cooking skills. With Mosaic, you can enjoy many tasty vegan and vegetarian dishes that ship frozen to your doorstep. Editors’ Choice winner Fresh N Lean has a prepared meal delivery service that serves wider palettes, but Mosaic is a strong contender for plant-based diets.

How Much Does Mosaic Cost?

Mosaic is a subscription-based service that offers a lot of flexibility. You fill a box with either 6, 12, or 18 meals by picking items yourself or letting Mosaic make the selections. You can buy one box a la carte and then cancel, or choose to have boxes delivered every week (or every two, three, or four weeks). That's as little as $50 per month or as much as $300 per week depending on how much you want to commit. Boxes with 12 or 18 meals receive free shipping; otherwise, shipping costs $9.99. Mosaic delivers throughout most of the nation, except for some gaps in the southwest. The site lets you enter a zip code to confirm your region is covered.

To fill a box, you choose from Mosaic’s selections, which come in many shapes, sizes, and prices. Oat bowls cost $5.99, while soups cost $8.99. Veggie bowls cost $10.99, while pizzas cost $11.99. Finally, family meals cost $23.95, and, as the name implies, they're meant to serve up to four people.

Mosaic’s Menu

As mentioned, Mosaic’s food comes in five categories: Oat Bowls, Soups, Veggie Bowls, Pizzas, and Family Meals. As a vegan and vegetarian-friendly meal service, Mosaic does a good and creative job of finding fresh uses for otherwise ordinary ingredients. Breakfast oat bowls and soups range from Veggie Sausage With Gouda Oats to Curried Lentil Soup. There are only four oat bowls and four soup options to choose from, though.

The veggie bowls make up the most substantial single-serving offerings. With more than 20 to choose from, the bowls typically feature a base, such as curry or noodles, and a layer, such as Ginger Sesame or Beet Bourguignon. Pizzas, a recent addition, have toppings that include four cheese pizza, mushroom lover's pizza, and a pepper pizza covered in soy "sausage" crumbles.

Most interesting, though, might be the huge family meals. Sure, other meal kits will let you get a veggie bowl, but Mosaic lets you order a whole veggie pot pie or a lasagna primavera. Mosaic’s veggie bowls, unique as they are, can start to blend together after a while. But family meals inject exciting variety into your box, even if only as tomorrow’s leftovers.

As someone with a peanut allergy, I sometimes struggle with vegan and vegetarian dishes. However, Mosaic’s filters and nutritional information let me order plenty of safe meals. The website includes a blog to help guide you on your vegetarian or vegan journey. Of course, none of this does you any good if you also want meat. Green Chef, our Editors’ Choice winner for plant-forward meals, has meat options.

Mosaic’s Packaging

Mosaic’s packaging is light and completely recyclable, something we expect for vegetarian meal kits given their focus on health and environmental sustainability. Dry ice keeps the food frozen until you move it into your freezer (where you should keep it until you're ready to cook). No thawing or tricky gel pack disposal is necessary. Just be careful handling dry ice, as it can burn your skin.

Cooking and Eating With Mosaic

Mosaic’s meals require more prep time than Fresh N Lean and other prepared meal kits; you can’t just pop these into the microwave. Still, the cooking process is far more convenient than traditional meal kits such as Blue Apron and HelloFresh.

For soups and bowls, you run the containers under warm water until you can cleanly dump the contents into a pan or pot. Add some oil to the veggie bowl, or some water to the soup, and stir until the heat brings the food back to colorful life. The larger family meals, while not difficult to prepare, require more planning than individual meal kits. After preheating the oven, I had to cook my pot pie for more than an hour. Fortunately, these methods produced appealing results.

My wife and I were largely satisfied with the food. The Pozole Verde soup is more like a glorified sauce I'd put on a taco than a meal in its own right. That said, I enjoyed the taste. The Ginger Quinoa Veggie soup could use noodles or something to offer more substance, but it soothed my hunger.

The veggie bowls capture the regional flavor they advertise on the box, even if they're a bit mild. Mango adds sweet notes to the Chipotle Burrito Bowl, while the Jerk Lentils and Plantains have noticeable African and Caribbean flavors. The veggie bowl portions feel more filling than the soups, as well as meals from similar prepared vegan service Veestro.

And the Veggie Pot Pie? It's big enough to feed multiple people for a few days. The flaky crusty is fantastic, while the vegetables blend into a comforting flavor.

Verdict: Mosaic Is a Delicious Vegetarian Service

As more vegan and vegetarian meal kits hit the market, you have more ways than ever to eat in a way that’s better for your body and planet. With its diverse prepared meals that you can store in your freezer, Mosaic makes it easy and delicious to go green. That said, it just doesn't quite edge out our Editors' Choice winner Fresh N Lean, which has a more varied prepared meal menu for all diets, and Green Chef, which has fantastic plant-based meal kits as well as excellent options for meat eaters.

Principal Writer, Software

My PCMag career began in 2013 as an intern. Now, I'm a senior writer, using the skills I acquired at Northwestern University to write about dating apps, meal kits, programming software, website builders, video streaming services, and video games. I was previously a senior editor at Geek.com and have written for The A.V. Club, Kotaku, and Paste Magazine. I'm the author of the gaming history book Video Game of the Year: A Year-by-Year Guide to the Best, Boldest, and Most Bizarre Games from Every Year Since 1977, and the reason everything you know about Street Sharks is a lie.

The Technology I Use

I use the newest Android and iOS smartphones for testing, but I currently use an iPhone 14 as my personal phone. I just hate that we gave up headphone jacks.

I've always favored gaming laptops over desktops. On that note, I have a 16-inch HP Envy with an Intel Core i9-13900H CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU. No matter what machine I’m working on, an alarming amount of my personal and professional life revolves around cloud-synced Google Drive files.

For food subscriptions, my household sticks with CookUnity and HelloFresh for meals. Video streaming is a bit more complicated. While there are too many services to list, we're subscribed to most of the major ones. These days, I find myself drawn to HBO Max's movies and shows, as well as Peacock's reality trash.

I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan, and I sincerely believe the Nintendo Switch will go down as one of the best gaming consoles of all time. It has an unbelievable library of new and old games from Nintendo and third-party companies. The handheld/console hybrid approach makes playing games so much more flexible, a legacy that continues with the Nintendo Switch 2 and Valve’s Steam Deck.
