Microsoft has announced a new handset which it describes as an “affordable flagship”. With the Lumia 830, Microsoft wants to call out Apple and Samsung with its handsets, especially when it comes to price. Microsoft says that the 830 offers far better value at 330 euros, than either the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S5.

Processing power is also impressive for a phone that will cost around £300. It’s a quad-core snapdragon 400-powered device, so it should be able to handle games and apps with no trouble at all.

The 830 also has interchangeable rear covers, NFC and wireless charging. There are some really great accessories too that will allow you to stream to your TV with Miracast, as well as charge on the new wireless charging pad, which has built-in lights for notifications.

Photography gets a boost too, with Microsoft’s smallest and thinnest optical image stabilisation module, which helps make the phone just 150g, and 8.5mm thick. But the company has boosted the startup time for its camera too, and has used the hardware button to boot straight into the camera, and then automatically take a photo.

As a bonus, Microsoft is also offering three months free Skype with every new phone purchase. It’s unlimited too, so you can call any country landline or mobile completely free.
