So far, 2018 has been all about improving production at Tesla. The Model 3 wasn't being produced fast enough, so Elon Musk reviewed the whole process, paused production, and then moved to 24/7 production. It seems to be working as two new versions of the Model 3 have been confirmed along with details of their capabilities.

As Electrek reports, Tesla is set to introduce the Model 3 Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive and the Model 3 Performance Dual Motor All-Wheel-Drive. We expected to be kept waiting until July for them.

For reference, the standard Model 3 uses a rear-mounted motor and can achieve a range of between 220 and 310 miles on a single charge. The stated top speed is 130mph and the 0-60mph time is 5.6 seconds. The dual motor all-wheel-drive version matches the 310 mile range, but improves the 0-60mph time to 4.5 seconds and increases the top speed to 140mph. Opting for all-wheel-drive adds $5,000 to the price.

The Performance version of the Model 3 is a different beast. While it still retains the 310 mile range, the 0-60mph time is improved significantly to just 3.5 seconds. The top speed is also boosted to 155mph. Musk claims it's 15 percent faster than a BMW Model 3 and has better handling. The Performance version also includes a carbon fiber spoiler, black and white interior options, and 20-inch Performance wheels. For this extra speed and acceleration, you'll need to pay $78,000 and join the growing list of pre-orders Tesla needs to fulfill.

While a range improvement would have been nice, the extra performance and all-wheel-drive will be enough for most. Musk also pointed out in a tweet that the dual motor versions will continue to drive "even if a motor breaks down."

Orders are now open to reserve these versions of the Model 3, but don't expect delivery any time soon. Tesla currently estimates delivery at six to nine months after a reservation is placed, and I'm sure that time will increase as more consumers hear about these new versions becoming available.
