Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has tried out rival Apple's mixed reality headset—and posted a lengthy video comparing it to the Meta Quest 3.

Unsurprisingly, Zuckerberg spent most of the video arguing that Meta's line of Quest headsets are better than the Apple Vision Pro from both a price and specifications standpoint.

A friend of Zuckerberg's filmed his entire Apple Vision Pro comparison review video on a Meta Quest 3, which offers a similar ability to pull up browser windows and applications that appear to hover in the environment around you, like the Vision Pro. It's also possible to play Xbox games on the Quest 3, for example.

In his review, Zuck argues that not only is the Quest headset "7 times less expensive," but also more comfortable. "We designed it to weigh 120 grams less, which makes a really big difference on your face," he said, comparing the device to the Vision Pro. "There's no wires that get in the way when you move around."

Zuckerberg is correct that the Apple Vision Pro is heavier overall. Its weight can vary from 600 to 650 grams, while the Meta Quest 3 weighs 515 grams.

The Meta CEO says the Quest's field of view is wider and argues that his company's headset offers a brighter and "crisper" screen than the Apple Vision Pro. He also doesn't seem impressed by Apple's use of motion blur, which the Quest does not use.

The Meta exec and Facebook founder admits that Apple's higher-resolution screen is "really nice," but claims that Apple made a lot of "trade-offs" to make that happen.

"There are a lot of people who just assumed that Vision Pro would be higher quality because it's Apple and it costs $3,000 more, but you know, honestly, I'm pretty surprised that Quest is so much better for the vast majority of things that people use these headsets for with that price differential," Zuck says in the video.

Both headsets support hand tracking, but Zuckerberg says Meta's hand-tracking tech is more accurate. "I know that some fanboys get upset when anyone dares to question if Apple's going to be the leader in a new category, but the reality is that every generation of computing has an open and a closed model. And yeah, in mobile, Apple's closed model won. But it's not always that way."

"In this next generation, Meta is going to be the open model."

I’m a reporter for PCMag covering tech news early in the morning. Prior to joining PCMag, I was a producer and reporter at Decrypt and launched its gaming vertical, GG. I have previously written for Input, Game Rant, Dot Esports, and other places, covering a range of gaming, tech, crypto, and entertainment news.

I’ve been a PC gamer since The Sims (yes, the original) in the CD-ROM days. I still think about my first-gen pink iPod mini, which, looking back, was not so mini. In 2020, I finally built my own custom Windows PC for gaming with a 3090 graphics card, but I also regularly use Mac and iOS devices. As a reporter, I’m passionate about documenting the wide world of tech and how it affects our daily lives.
