Pixel 4a: Renders Leak Google's Next Budget-Friendly Smartphone

Google will release another mid-range device, according to insider Steve Hemmerstoffer. Leaked renders of the Pixel 4a indicate that we should expect a hole-punch display, a rear-based fingerprint scanner, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Pixel 4a should arrive in the first half of 2020.

Flagship smartphones earn the most attention, but Google's Pixel 3a proved that some degree of affordability can spark significant sales. Now, the Mountain View-based company plans to roll out another budget-friendly smartphone. In a leak published by 91 Mobiles, insider Steve Hemmerstoffer offers an early look at the Pixel 4a.

The Pixel 4a has a hole-punch display in this leak, sporting an edge-to-edge screen with a tiny cutout for the front-facing camera. Around the back, the renders show Google's yet-to-be-announced Pixel phone with a fingerprint scanner, which might mean Face Unlock won't be included. Additionally, the Pixel 4a does retain the 3.5mm headphone jack here.

Google will stick with a one-camera setup, according to the renders. Smartphones are featuring more lenses than ever, but the Pixel 4a could still capture excellent photos due to Google's software magic. Yet the camera module storing the lens, LED flash, and related sensors does align with what's found on the Pixel 4. So there are some similarities expected between the Pixel 4a and the existing Pixel 4 even if all capabilities aren't identical.

Just don't run off with these renders, though. Hemmerstoffer designed them, not Google itself. The insider spoke with sources involved in the supply chain, and thus the renders are likely accurate but not guaranteed to match what Google will release.

Specifications inside aren't so clear. Google will use middle-of-the-road components, but it has some options. The Pixel 4a could ship with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 730 or 765. Meanwhile, internal storage should remain at 64GB. Since the Pixel 3a set forth with modest specifications and succeeded, Google can attempt the same for the Pixel 4a. It shouldn't require an abundance of tweaks to satisfy consumers.

Expect to see the Pixel 4a go official at Google I/O 2020. The annual developer conference should be held in May, and it'll also serve as a launching pad for the next version of Android.
