In a rarity, SpaceX is offering a major nationwide discount on the standard V4 Starlink dish for all US subscribers, bringing the price down from $499 to $299.

Previously, the reduced pricing was only available in 28 US states through a "Regional Savings" program, which the company first introduced in June. But today, Starlink.com expanded the discount to all prospective customers nationwide.

The price change isn't permanent, though; it will only last until Oct. 5. In addition, the hardware discount is available both for the Starlink residential tier and the “Roam” plan, which lets you use the satellite internet service from more than one location.

The $299 price has also been rolling out to third-party retailers, including WalmartBest Buy, and Target, enabling buyers to pick up a Starlink dish from a local store or have it shipped.

For customers in one of the 28 states where the $299 price was already available, SpaceX is offering an additional perk if you buy during the promotional period: The company will add a one-time $100 service credit to your account, which can be applied to reducing the monthly subscription to a Starlink account.

“Receive a one-time service credit in areas where Starlink has abundant network availability,” the company says. “Offer is only valid for Residential Standard service in eligible regions.”

Subscribers to the residential tier usually pay $120 per month, while the Roam plan starts at $150 per month.

SpaceX has offered various discounts to entice more US customers to sign up for a Starlink subscription. Recently, the company reduced the standard Starlink dish price to as low as $199 in select US states before launching the new nationwide promotion.

So far, SpaceX hasn't reduced the price for the newly launched Starlink Mini dish in the US, where the hardware currently costs $599. Elsewhere, the company has been offering the Mini dish at a more affordable pricetag, including for only $200 in certain countries in Latin America.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • My first video game console: a Nintendo Famicom
  • I loved my Sega Saturn despite PlayStation's popularity.
  • The iPod Video I received as a gift in college
  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
