Gaming is supposed to be cool, and not simply because playing new or classic releases is a pleasurable experience. Fans and thermal paste keep high-powered PCs from melting while running intense titles at their highest settings. The iPhone is many things, including an incredibly popular gaming device, so it similarly needs to regulate temperatures. Apple, during its "Glowtime" showcase, revealed how new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro tech reduces heat, leading to better, cooler gaming sessions for console-quality games.

How Apple Cools the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro

The secret to iPhone 16's reduced heat is a rearranged chip architecture that increases efficiency and a recycled aluminum thermal substructure that keeps temperatures down. The iPhone 16 Pro also sports an impressive heat-resistant titanium design, and the smartphones carry larger batteries, too.

Combined, these revisions let the iPhone 16 family access more power for longer gaming sessions without the risk of overheating. Apple claims up to “30% higher sustained performance.”

The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro's Gaming Chops

These physical upgrades complement the tantalizing gaming potential of iPhone 16’s A18 chip. This silicon supports cutting-edge graphics techniques like hardware-accelerated ray tracing. It lets iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 pro run modern, AAA games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Death Stranding, and Resident Evil 2 Remake

Speaking of games, Apple also unveiled a new look at Honor of Kings: World. This is an open-world RPG spin-off of Tencent’s Honor of Kings franchise, a MOBA already beloved on mobile. But iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro provide enhanced graphics settings that further blur the lines between mobile, console, and PC gaming.

This is in addition to the cool iOS 18 features, like its new Game Mode. By enabling this setting, you enjoy gaming-focused benefits. For example, Game Mode has reduced Bluetooth latency, which delivers a smoother gaming experience when using wireless controllers and headphones. You can also use it to deactivate background activity for improved battery life.

iPhone 16 and 16 Pro's Potent Gaming Potential

Handheld gaming is where all the hot action is these days, from the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 to exciting handheld gaming PCs. The iPhone 16 probably won’t replace devices like that for hardcore gamers looking for portable play. However, we carry phones with us all the time, so better iPhone gaming means better gaming for more people worldwide.

Principal Writer, Software

My PCMag career began in 2013 as an intern. Now, I'm a senior writer, using the skills I acquired at Northwestern University to write about dating apps, meal kits, programming software, website builders, video streaming services, and video games. I was previously a senior editor at Geek.com and have written for The A.V. Club, Kotaku, and Paste Magazine. I'm the author of the gaming history book Video Game of the Year: A Year-by-Year Guide to the Best, Boldest, and Most Bizarre Games from Every Year Since 1977, and the reason everything you know about Street Sharks is a lie.

The Technology I Use

I use the newest Android and iOS smartphones for testing, but I currently use an iPhone 14 as my personal phone. I just hate that we gave up headphone jacks.

I've always favored gaming laptops over desktops. On that note, I have a 16-inch HP Envy with an Intel Core i9-13900H CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU. No matter what machine I’m working on, an alarming amount of my personal and professional life revolves around cloud-synced Google Drive files.

For food subscriptions, my household sticks with CookUnity and HelloFresh for meals. Video streaming is a bit more complicated. While there are too many services to list, we're subscribed to most of the major ones. These days, I find myself drawn to HBO Max's movies and shows, as well as Peacock's reality trash.

I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan, and I sincerely believe the Nintendo Switch will go down as one of the best gaming consoles of all time. It has an unbelievable library of new and old games from Nintendo and third-party companies. The handheld/console hybrid approach makes playing games so much more flexible, a legacy that continues with the Nintendo Switch 2 and Valve’s Steam Deck.
