Pros & Cons

Instant Messenger Spellchecker Specs

Type: Personal

Slapping a spell-checker onto an instant messenger may be like putting lipstick on a pig—who writes IMs in proper English?—but some business users may want to make a good impression, so we checked out Instant Messenger Spellchecker (MSN) (Yahoo!) (16 days free, then $14.95). As it stands, Spellchecker is a decent first version of an app (Version 1.31, actually), but it's not as usable as it needs to be. The company is planning major improvements, including AIM and Trillian compatibility, in-line spell-checking (very important), and some of the auto-correct features you see in Microsoft Word, such as capitalizing the first letter of a sentence. We'd recommend waiting for the next version.
