Apple is expanding the Find My network to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.
Find My is primarily used to locate compatible Apple hardware and third-party products. Until recently that list of products included certain iOS devices, some Apple Watch models, MacBooks featuring the custom M1 chip, and the Apple AirTag that was finally announced on April 20.
9to5Mac reports that firmware updates for the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max will bring Find My support to Apple's higher-end audio products. (The entry-level AirPods remain excluded.) Apple has since updated the Find My support article to include both of those devices.
Unfortunately, there still isn't a way to force a firmware update to either model of AirPods; Apple simply updates them in the background. That means it could take a while for a given AirPods Pro or AirPods Max owner to be able to add their devices to the Find My app despite these updates.
Still, there's no denying that being able to easily find a lost device is useful, especially for AirPods Pro owners. It's much easier to lose a true wireless earbud than a pair of over-ear headphones that come with their own case. Here's hoping the rollout doesn't take too long.
