When it comes to videogames there has always been, and probably will always be, a debate about how they affect children. Some benefits might be positive, while some might be negative. Regardless of evidence though, it seems a group of teachers wants to report parents for neglect if they find out their children have been playing sexual or violent games.

The Nantwich Education Partnership covers 16 schools from Cheshire, and has suggested that when teachers suspect children are being exposed to 18-rated videogames that they will act to report that to police and social services. This could, in some extreme cases having their children placed into the hands of the state.

Of course, there's a chance that some of the parents allowing their children to play such games are neglectful, and there is probably some evidence that such games are harmful, but the issue of teachers making the call on such things seems unreasonable. Games, it seems, are different to TV shows and movies, and no teachers are suggesting that children who see adult-rated filmed material will have social services called.

This is one debate that will likely run on for some time.
