Sony is giving nothing away about what this system software update contains, but hopefully it fixes a few bugs.

It doesn't matter how much testing Sony performed prior to the launch of the PlayStation 5, thousands of gamers using the new console for hours every day are going to discover bugs. Today, Sony released the first firmware update since the PS5 launched, and it's a big one.

As VG247 reports, the update takes the PS5's system software to version 20.02-02.25.00, but unfortunately Sony isn't revealing much with the patch notes that accompany the update. It's the typical catch-all of "This system software update improves system performance."

Even so, this is the first system software update since gamers have been using the console in anger, which means it's going to be an important one for fixing the bugs that have appeared since launch. Two of the most prominent, which it's hoped this update addresses, are the console crashing when Rest Mode is turned on, and the use of external storage leading to repeated database rebuilds and subsequent errors.

The PS5 system software updates are automatic, but you can trigger one to happen manually by navigating to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software on your console and select "Update Using Internet." Depending on your connection speed, it should take a few minutes to download the 868MB update and then install it. Fingers crossed you get a more stable and better performing console afterwards.
