If you're a PS5 owner currently enjoying Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, take a moment and check you are actually playing the PS5 version of the game. It seems someone screwed up and you may be playing the PS4 version instead.
As Eurogamer reports, the problem isn't the fault of gamers, it's to do with how Activision decided to release the game for Sony's new console. When purchasing the Cross-Gen bundle or Ultimate Edition of the game, you get both the PS4 and PS5 versions. It's then possible to "download all" content to your PS5.
The side effect of selecting this option is both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game get downloaded to your PS5. Then, for some reason, the PS5 defaults to launching the PS4 version of the game when you select play. To stop this from happening, tap the three dots next to the play button and ensure the PS5 version is selected. Then you can enjoy much faster load times, full DualSense controller feedback, and 120fps output if your TV supports it.
Hopefully Activision can quickly release a patch that allows the PS5 to default to the PS5 version of the game when all content is downloaded. It's also possible for owners to select to only download the PS5 version from the PlayStation Store and avoid the problem that way.
It's not just PS5 owners experiencing version problems with Black Ops Cold War, though. User KillKo commented on Eurogamer's coverage of this issue and pointed out if you purchase the game on Xbox Series X, but don't spend the extra on the Cross-Gen bundle, you don't get the Series X version of the game. Thankfully, Microsoft has a good refund policy, so the problem can be easily rectified.
