Run run run, hack hack hack, run run run. That's pretty much the basis of the new Eragon game, an adaptation of the book and new movie by the same name. In this action game, you play the part of the Dragon Rider Eragon, who runs around killing people and smashing things with Brom, his mentor.

And, well, that's it. The game feels and plays like something from 5 years ago. Unlike today's "sandbox" games, where you're free to roam and discover things on your own, your character in Eragon is led through very rigid levels, where challenges must be dealt with and enemies dispatched in order. And while visual detail is very good in some scenes, you've got no control over the point of view, and the limited point of view combined with the very limited ability to explore the terrain is very frustrating: don't look over there, you can't jump on that, no riding that horse, can't go that way, and so on.

We also quickly grew bored of the fighting controls. Eragon is armed with arrows, magic arrows, a sword, and magic powers (and he can occasionally call his pet dragon for help when the game says it's ok), but there isn't enough variation or challenge to hold our interest as we hacked our way through the ranks of the bad guys.

We put way more time into this game than was warranted, mostly out of curiosity to see if the game suddenly gets better. It didn't. We recommend passing on this one.
