Well, it was always going to happen, but someone has decided to try and get drugs, a knife and a phone into Bedford prison using a drone.

The DJI Vision 2 used became trapped on the fence as it tried to enter the prison, and was found by staff, who called the police. This is thought to be the first time anyone has attempted to use a drone to smuggle things into a UK prison, but the practice is apparently quite common in the US.

This is unlikely to be the last time someone attempts to deliver something by drone to a place they shouldn't, but it also sounds like the prisons are going to be fairly aware of this happening.

With drones sometimes entering airspace when they shouldn't, some companies - specifically DJI - offer firmware-level blocking in certain GPS regions. This might stop casual users from making a mistake, but the hardened criminal will easily be able to bypass this, which is perhaps why we haven't heard anyone demand it be used.
