If your business requires effective backup and recovery, as well as strong security, Acronis Cyber Protect is one of the first services you should consider. It can back up, restore, and safeguard your on-premises and cloud backup data across PC and mobile platforms, with protections driven by artificial intelligence and machine learning. Likewise, endpoint monitoring functions let you assess vulnerabilities and manage patches. With version 17, Cyber Protect adds full macOS 26 Tahoe security coverage, support for new operating systems (including Windows Server 2022/2025 Essentials, as well as various Linux flavors), and new local, agentless backup tools. Overall, its features might be overkill for smaller companies, but Cyber Protect's robust flexibility and comprehensive protection easily earn the service our Editors' Choice award for business cloud backup.

Price and Plans

Cyber Protect offers a free, 30-day comprehensive trial with no credit card requirement. After that, you must sign up for a paid plan. The service has three tiers, with their costs based on the number and type of devices you want to protect. Unlike the competing MSP360, Cyber Protect has no limits on the number of gigabytes you can store, which is ideal for companies safeguarding large amounts of data.

The entry-level tier is Cyber Protect Standard, which costs $85 per year, per license, for a single workstation. That's roughly the same price as CrashPlan ($88 per license per year) and slightly less than Backblaze ($99 per license per year). This package includes all core backup and security features, including antivirus protection and vulnerability assessments for the Linux, macOS, and Windows devices associated with your Acronis plan. For a physical server, the price jumps to a hefty $595 per year.

The next plan up the ladder, Cyber Protect Backup Advanced, provides comprehensive integration with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, enabling you to back up your online office suite work. It also adds remote device management and data wiping to prevent unauthorized access and protect sensitive data. Oddly, you will miss out on some cybersecurity features, such as macOS vulnerability assessments and URL filtering, which are available with the two other Acronis Cyber Protect plans. Protecting a workstation with Cyber Protect Backup Advanced costs $109 per year, while protecting a server costs a significantly higher $779 per year.

Finally, the Cyber Protect Advanced plan has top-end backup and security features best suited for larger IT environments. Subscribers receive active cybersecurity protection that operates in real-time, leveraging AI-powered antivirus, anti-malware, anti-ransomware, and cryptojacking technologies. Machine learning-based monitoring and smart alerting identify and remediate problems before they impact your business. With this plan, Cyber Protect is a fully competitive, business-grade protection platform. It costs $129 for a one-year, one-workstation license or $925 per year for a server license.

Acronis offers discounts for signing up for three- or five-year licenses. Cyber Protect's pricing may seem steep compared with Arcserve ShadowProtect SPX (starting at $59.95 per license per year) and MSP360 (starting at $29.99 per license per year), but a subscription includes endpoint protection, mobile data management, and ransomware and cryptojacking protection. You can apply global threat monitoring and smart alert functions to any PC, network attached storage, system attached storage, backup tapes, disks, or public or private cloud storage platform, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure. New to version 17 are local features, including agentless backup and migration in virtual environments and Device Sense, a discovery tool that identifies unmanaged endpoints (on fleets of three or more devices).

Acronis also has Cyber Protect OT, a localized backup system that lets you create isolated, secure backups on-site. These systems are set up on a custom basis, so you must contact Acronis for a quote and installation information.

Overall, Acronis Cyber Protect's numerous security features and the ability to back up all data from every device, including those with multiple terabytes of data, make it one of the most comprehensive security and cloud backup solutions we've tested. If this all sounds complicated, Acronis offers an onboarding service that costs $305.

Setting Up Acronis Cyber Protect

Cyber Protect lets you back up an entire workstation as a single image file, ensuring bare-metal restore capability and making it easier to migrate your existing environment to a new PC. In terms of operating systems, Cyber Protect supports multiple platforms, including macOS Tahoe, Windows 10 and 11, Windows Server 2022 and 2025 Essentials, and Linux Fedora and Red Hat.

You can sign up for a free trial of Acronis by clicking the Try Now button on the Acronis Cyber Protect product page. This opens a form where you enter your name, company name, industry, and the number of employees at your company. You'll also be asked for your region, email address, and phone number.

After clicking a verification link sent via email, Cyber Protect takes you to the user console. There, the dashboard presents links to the backup software available for different devices, as well as a sidebar housing security monitoring and backup management areas. Everything is clearly labelled. Although the number of options may be overwhelming for those who are less technically inclined, navigation is simple enough that you won't need additional training.

Cyber Protect has two deployment options: on-premises (in your local network) and in the cloud (at one of Acronis' data centers). If you go for on-premises, you install and maintain that instance of Cyber Protect yourself. If you choose the cloud option, Acronis essentially acts as a managed service provider, although you must initially configure and operate the solution yourself. Thanks to the service's web-based interface, you can log in and manage your devices, backups, and protection from any browser. For on-premise deployments, this is the IP address or name of the machine where the Management Server gets installed; for cloud deployments, it’s the URL to access the cloud platform.

We selected the Windows Workstation software and began the installation process. The setup tool offered custom installation options. However, our backup needs were fairly straightforward, so we went with the default settings. The setup tool spent roughly two minutes unpacking Acronis Cyber Protect, then asked us to register our workload. The registration process took less than two minutes and didn't require advanced technical knowledge. This lets anyone connect their devices to Acronis without needing IT assistance.

By default, Acronis automatically schedules daily backups at noon. You can modify this schedule by visiting Device Settings > Protect. There, you can tweak other useful features, such as the number of backups Acronis keeps (the default is 90) and data encryption. This is one of the easiest setup processes we've experienced in all the backup solutions we've tested.

Dashboard, Backups, and Software Management

In testing, Acronis Cyber Protect proved to be surprisingly intuitive for such a robust and complex service. The dashboard gave us a snapshot of the current backup status for all endpoints. This included cyber protection details, such as the amount of storage backed up on a given day, the number of malware and malicious URLs blocked, existing vulnerabilities, and patches ready for installation. The software also delivered a detailed view of devices, including their names, current protection status, device state (running or idle), agent and agent state, last definition update, number of existing backups, and total storage used.

The devices menu allowed us to choose the networked items we wished to protect. After selecting a device, a helpful pop-up window prompted us to enter a backup destination, schedule, and specify whether we want encryption and whether we want the backup converted to a virtual machine (VM). Additionally, you can select any special applications, such as Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, a Microsoft Active Directory (AD) identity store, or an Oracle database, if the selected device is hosting one of these. Acronis provides continuous protection, similar to what Carbonite Cloud Backup provides.

We backed up a PC with roughly 300GB of data. In fact, we did it twice. The first backup ran smoothly in the background while we continued working, and the process took approximately an hour. My second backup took about half as long, as Acronis uses incremental backups, only backing up files that have been modified since the last backup.

After completing our first backup, we completely restored the system and later recovered a subset of files. Both processes took just a few clicks and worked flawlessly. Alternatively, you can launch the latest backup as a VM. If you have direct access to the location where the local backups are stored, the resulting backup files can be mounted and browsed natively in Windows.

Acronis Instant Restore handles file recovery. Acting primarily as a business continuity feature, it lets you mount and launch a virtual machine from the backup storage device (cloud or local) without transferring any data to your virtual host. This also applies to any Amazon EC2 instance that's been backed up. It's worth mentioning that this will be highly dependent on the speed of your storage medium, so you need redundant local backups to ensure this works as intended.

Another major benefit of Acronis Cyber Protect is the Software Management system. This area includes an inventory that allows you to view all the software on your devices, which can help you identify software that's no longer needed. There are also Vulnerabilities and Patches pages for quickly viewing programs with security issues and available patches. In a nice touch, Acronis bulk-installs patches for the vulnerabilities it's identified. This makes it easy to fully optimize your device's security.

Data Security Options

Acronis uses AI-based behavioral detection for zero-day attack prevention, a feature that identifies and mitigates threats from new or uncategorized exploits. It does this by studying how applications work on a PC endpoint and clamping down on them if they start tinkering with registry files or encrypting files and folders—a common preliminary move for ransomware attacks. Many cloud backup solutions are compromised when ransomware deletes backups. Cyber Protect also employs machine learning to monitor performance and reliability. This gives you preemptive anomaly detection and proactive hardware monitoring for macOS and Windows systems.

Acronis Cyber Protect secures your data in several ways, starting with TLS encryption for all data sent to and from Acronis servers. This is combined with CurveMQ, an advanced encryption protocol for online communications. These protocols ensure Acronis Cyber Protect compliance with most data regulations, including the GDPR and HIPAA.

Acronis Cyber Protect Standard and Advanced also include antivirus/anti-malware protection, exploit management, hard drive health monitoring, and data protection maps. These tools help you prevent your devices from being infected and avoid damaging your backups with malware. They also make Acronis Cyber Protect one of the most security-focused business backup tools on the market—just ensure that you’re purchasing the plan with the security measures your company needs.

If you don’t trust cloud backups even with these precautions, or can't use them for some reason, you can opt for Acronis Cyber Protect OT (Local). This keeps all data on your property, eliminating the risks inherent in even the most secure data transfers to cloud storage.

Mobile Apps

Acronis Cyber Protect is available for both Android and iOS, and has more functionality than apps from competitors like Backblaze and MSP360. Those tools only let you access computer backups from your phone; Cyber Protect lets you fully back up your phone as well. This ensures continued access to your data if you lose or break your handset. You can also use the Acronis Cyber Protect App to access backups of other phones and devices connected to your Acronis plan, as well as to perform remote fixes.

However, you must purchase the Acronis Cloud Storage add-on to use the mobile app's backup functionality. Cloud storage capacities start at 250GB ($229 per year) and max out at 5TB ($3,309 per year). Acronis Cloud Storage is expensive, but it offers full encryption and HIPAA compliance, features that are not typically found in other mobile-friendly cloud storage solutions, such as Google Drive Workspace. You can also connect Acronis Cloud Storage to multiple devices, providing coverage for your entire team.

Gabriel Zamora

Senior Writer, Software

In 2014, I began my career at PCMag as a freelancer. That blossomed into a full-time position in 2021, and I now review email marketing apps, mobile operating systems, web hosting services, streaming music platforms, and video games as a senior writer. I'm a graduate of Hunter College, a hard-core gamer, and an Apple enthusiast.

The Technology I Use

I play many video games in my spare time, especially on my gaming rig, which is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 GPU, and 16GB of RAM. The Nintendo Switch 2 also sees a lot of action thanks to its backward compatibility, but I'll also occasionally hop on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

I'm currently using an iPhone 15 Pro Max, coupled with the Apple AirPods Max that my brother gifted me for Christmas, to listen to music or podcasts on the go. That said, I always carry my iPad Mini with me. The tablet line has served as my faithful drawing canvas for years, and is the one piece of tech I upgrade whenever I can. Paired with an inexpensive Wacom Bamboo Duo stylus, I have a compact, reliable, and convenient doodling set to keep me busy during long commutes across the Big Apple.

Cooking is my dearest passion next to gaming, and I embrace any tech that makes modern cookery a little easier. I discovered the Paprika Recipe Manager during my stint as a chef at Google HQ and fell in love with its simple yet feature-packed toolset. It makes saving and editing online recipes a cinch, and having easy access to them on my phone is a tremendous convenience.
