Channel 4, beloved broadcaster and home to many a fine show has decided to branch out into game development. Using the "All 4" brand that it recently introduced as a replacement for the ageing 4oD service it has launched "All 4 Games".

Obviously part of that will tie into games that have a relevance to Channel 4 programmes, but the developer will also be available to any other company that wants to get something created. It will also provide promotional and marketing support, something the broadcaster has always been pretty excellent at.

The company will be based out of Glasgow, which makes a lot of sense as Scotland has a vibrant game and general app development culture. Rockstar Games, for example develops out of Edinburgh thanks to its purchase of DMA Design, the studio behind Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto. Indeed, All 4 Games is being run by Colin MacDonald who was part of DMA Design during the original GTA period.

Channel 4 will no-doubt hope that it can do for independent games what it did for independent TV. Hopefully there will not be a Location, Location, Location videogame any time soon.
